The “Academy meets photokina” exhibition area has been one of the highlights of photokina since 2006. It is run by the Education and Further Education section of the German Photographic Association (DGPh). More than 50 universities, academies, universities of applied sciences and private colleges from Germany and the rest of Europe applied for a stand at photokina 2010 and submitted concepts and samples of their work. At the beginning of February following detailed discussions, the expert jury agreed on the 22 “Academy meets photokina” participants who will have their own stands at photokina in 2010. The selected educational institutions include nine foreign universities.
The “Academy meets photokina” area will also include a programme of stage events with lectures and discussions, a “Black Box” with media presentations as well as a meeting point for portfolio viewings, which will also serve as a place where tutors, students and interested visitors can come together.
From over 50 submitted works, the jury has selected the following 22 universities:
Academy of Fine Arts, Cracow
FH Aachen
FH Dortmund
FH Hannover
FH Mainz
FH Würzburg

Photo+Medien Kiel: developing profiles
Photo- und Medienforum Kiel (Kiel Photo and Media Forum) and the Landesberufsschule Photo und Medien Kiel (State Vocational School Photo and Media Kiel) will jointly present a program entitled "developing profiles".
At their trade fair stand everything will revolve around apprenticeships and further education in the photo industry. Interested parties can obtain information about training opportunities to become a photographer, photo and media expert, photo and media laboratory technician or a photo designer at the Landesberufsschule Photo+Medien Kiel.
Moreover, Photo-und Medienforum Kiel will be presenting the 30-month “EVA” course: learn to be a photographer from the bottom up and get a vocational certificate at the end. In addition to technical knowledge, participants will also learn how to present themselves and their work on the market in a professional manner.
And that’s just the start: in keeping with this year’s motto “Photo+Medien Kiel: developing profiles”, interested individuals can receive information and plan their photography education. They can choose among one of the many seminars and courses from the annual programme or from custom-made workshops or coaching.
There has been a successful model in Kiel for decades: a career advancement qualification to become a sales specialist in specialist photography stores with a diploma in trade management (Handelsfachwirt IHK). In just six months, participants are provided with the commercial and photographic expertise necessary to take over a business or to start one from scratch.
Brand new this year: “Studio practice and management”, a three-month training course for photographers, which includes the contents of parts I and II of the examination for the master craftsman’s certificate. The course is also suitable for photographers who want to prepare themselves optimally for a management role in employment.
